Developed in the 1970's by Xerox, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Intel; Ethernet is a frame based networking technology for LAN, or local area network. Having been used since the 1980's, Ethernet is now the most widely used LAN technology.
The primary difference between these three is the speed.
Ethernet operates at transmission speeds of 10 mb/s, while fast Ethernet transmits at 100 mb/s, and gigabit Ethernet transmits at 1000 mb/s.
Fast Ethernet and gigabit Ethernet switches are backwards compatible to older CAT5 Ethernet networks, however the speed will be limited to the 10mb/s connections of Ethernet network.
There are a few important points you need to consider before buying a switch.
Figure out how many devices you need to connect to your switch, and make sure that you get a switch that with enough ports to support all the devices. Consider how many computers, printers, cameras etc. you want connected to your network.
Unmanaged switches are pre-configured with basic settings, and designed to be very user friendly and easy to use. Managed switches allow the user to manage and control security, performance, and traffic settings in the switch, usually through a web interface.
Do you need wireless access to your network? If so, make sure the switch you buy offers this feature.
